Before Starting

You may have seen Aikido on YouTube or read about it in a magazine so we would like to invite you to come and observe a class at the dojo you will be attending, this is so that you can see how we train and know what to expect. At this time you can ask any questions you may have, meet and talk to some of the students and download application forms etc.

Which Classes can I attend?

There are dedicated Beginners Classes at some dojos so use the website to check what is available at the dojo you plan to attend, these classes run continuously and will allow you to start at any time. Other dojos will start beginners at any time in their regular classes, just ask the instructor.
Once you are confident about rolling you can join any of the other classes.

How much does it cost?

We have two main types of fees, Mat Fees and Membership Fees. The Mat Fees are payable monthly or casually and are used to support the dojo to pay rent and replace mats and equipment. The membership fees go to Aikikai Australia to pay for insurance and support the Teaching and Technical committee who ensure the quality of teaching. Some special events and gradings also attract fees.

Most beginners prefer to use our Special Offer of 10 classes for $100 until they feel comfortable that Aikido is for them. Otherwise, you will need to take out a membership with Aikikai Australia before you start training then pay either the monthly or casual mat fee, FEES

What do I wear?

It is not necessary to purchase a uniform or weapons for your first class, it is quite alright to wear tracksuit pants and a tee shirt, as long as you don't mind rolling in them. Jewellery and piercings are generally discouraged as they may get caught up during training causing injury or embarrassment to you or your training partner.

What Equipment do I need?

Initially none, eventually you will want to purchase a uniform, these cost around $80 and can be purchased at either a martial arts shop or the dojo. Other items you will need are a Jo (wooden fighting stick) about $35, a bokken (wooden sword) about $40 and a tanto (wooden knife).

Membership Forms

Print off the membership form on the Aikikai Australia website and fill it in, then either bring it with you to the dojo or send it directly to Aikikai Australia with payment.

Osensei Quotes

Even though our path is completely different from the warrior arts of the past, it is not necessary to abandon totally the old ways. Absorb venerable traditions into this Art by clothing them with fresh garments, and building on the classic styles to create better forms.
